VoIP recording is the modern replacement for standard telephone systems and is being used by businesses worldwide. There are two different methods to VoIP recording: Port Mirroring and Dynamic Recording.
Port Mirroring involves the monitoring of VoIP calls as they pass through network data switches. These are then duplicated (or mirrored) and sent to the call recorder, where they can be accessed as normal from a computer for playback or to be archived.
The Port Mirroring method of VoIP recording is fairly generic and resilient; however it relies on the incoming calls being unencrypted. It can be used to monitor both inbound and outbound calls.
VoIP Recording is the New Call Recording
Dynamic Recording involves requesting the IP (call packets) from the call recorder, such as SMARTCALL. The call recorder can also monitor activity and make requests. The installation of a dynamic recording system requires careful consideration; however it does resolve the encryption issues encountered with Port Mirroring. The problem with Dynamic Recording is that, because it operates through a CTI interface, it can have telephony licence cost implications and, if anything goes wrong with the CTI connection or cable, the entire system will be out of use until the problem is solved.
VoIP recording provides businesses with all the benefits of standard call recording, and calls can easily be distributed via VoIP platforms. Of course, all voice over internet systems provided by SMARTCALL are FSA and PCI DSS compliant, and are completely secure.
VoIP Systems Comply with PCI DSS
Companies are required to record calls under guidelines set by the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards (PCI DSS). Sensitive data in particular, such as card validation codes, must be kept secure even when encrypted and after authorisation.
It’s easy to comply with the PCI DSS standards with VoIP call recording; simply mute or pause the recording while card details are being taken so that no personal data is stored on the recording, and therefore compliance with the guidelines are complete.
