VoIP Recording
VoIP telephony is now gaining market share and is replacing traditional TDM PBX systems. However, recording calls on VoIP systems can still be thought of as call recording of Trunks or Extension.
Trunk recording, If ISDN 30, is achieved through a passive TAP in the same way as with traditional TDM telephony platforms. Recording a SIP Trunk is similar but uses a direct TAP of the SIP VoIP protocol.
Recording VoIP Extensions can be achieved in two ways. The first is to monitor the VoIP data packets (calls) as they pass through network data switches. The packets are then duplicated or mirrored and sent to the call recorder. This method is known as Port Mirroring.
An alternative method of recording VoIP calls is to use the Dynamic recording or Dual streaming output provided by the leading VoIP telephony manufacturer. Each manufacturer provides their own recorder interface but in general they rely on the call recorder (such as SMARTCALL) to request IP (call) packets to be streamed to the recorder interface .The call recorder (SMARTCALL) uses the CTI interface to monitor activity and make requests..
Examples of manufactures that provide VoIP recording in this way are: Mitel, Aastra, Cisco and Avaya.
What method of VoIP recording is best?
There are advantages and disadvantages to both VoIP recording methods. For example Port Mirroring is fairly generic and is resilient in that it uses the distributed architecture of the Data Network. It does however, rely on the packets being unencrypted.
Dynamic (dual steaming) recording is attractive but requires careful design consideration. It does resolve the encryption issues but because it relies on CTI can have telephony licence cost implications, and reduced resilience with the CTI connection being a single point of failure..
What are the benefits of VoIP recording?
VoIP Recording provides all of the business benefits of call recording. In the VoIP environment calls to home workers or satellite sites can easily be recorded on centralised or distributed VoIP telephony platforms. SMARTCALL recording solutions are able to take advantage of the flexibility that VoIP telephony provides.
